METEORITE ?!

In 1988 a colleague of mine dug up a chunk of material, which was heavier than a piece of rock of the same size, but he didn't pay much attention to what he'd found at the time.

This artifact found its way as a decorative 'rock' in his back garden, adorning a favoured plant!

Then in 2004 September 29, the BBC screened a programme called 'Stardate..Close Encounters' which talked generally about Near Earth Objects and featured the asteroid Toutatis, which, on that date passed as close to Earth (<1.4M Km), as it would do for many years.

This programme rekindled interest in the 'stone', found in 1988, about 60 cm or so below the top soil level.

My friend brought it into work to ask me what I thought of it, and I have to say, I was intrigued to say the least.

A test with a magnet showed that there was an iron content, the magnetic 'attraction' varying considerably over the surface.

Below are a number of images that I have taken to show the object, which weighs about 900 gm, or so, and has a density of about 3.9 gm / cc. The question we ask is

"Is it a meteorite?"
