Important Information.

This page is a temporary page just for the duration of the event. If there is server overload then it may move to a new address without warning. Do not bookmark this page. Do not publicise this page. It may not be here when you return. Instead, please refer all traffic only to the main http://home.freeuk.net/dgstrange/transit.venus.2004/ site.

All of the sites with images contain exactly the same set of images. They are posted to several servers to try to prevent overload with too many people trying to all look at the same time on just one server. These pages automatically refresh and so will pick up each new image as it is posted.

Warning: You will go blind in a fraction of a second if you look at the Sun through binoculars or a telescope. The only safe way is to project the image onto a piece of card.

This page automatically refreshes every FIVE minutes.

Live Images of the Transit of Venus on 2004 Jun 8th:

04:00 UTC - The sky is clear. The Sun will rise shortly. We are ready to GO! Images shortly.

Some interesting clouds over the observatory, yesterday. "T" for Transit?

05:20 - Venus making a small chunk out of the Sun now, but we have a comms failure with the camera system. Windows networking is so flaky. The Windows ME machine just cannot see the network. Every setting has been checked and rechecked. This isn't where we wanted to go today.

Some of the people and equipment here today.

Images posted later in the day, via floppydisknet.

Viewing in Hydrogen AlphaViewing the Sun in Hydrogen Alpha rveals often hidden features, storms, flares, and prominences on the Sun. Today, however, there were only two extremely small spots, and one of the tiniest of prominences possible.

Viewing the Sun safelyAll the kids wanted to see, all at once, so the safe filtered glasses from the Solar Eclipse a few years ago came in handy.
